Exhibition:
The secret heart
The artistic development of “Sultana’s Dream”
The exhibition unveils a journey through the materials that make up the film Sultana’s Dream, Isabel Herguera’s first animated feature film, screened at the 2023 edition of ANIMALCOI.
The film is inspired by The Dream of the Sultana, a feminist tale by Rokeya Hossain, published in India in 1905, which imaginatively describes a country ruled by women. Herguera’s graphic style, which has been developed in his previous short films, expands in his latest work, which he worked on during his in his latest work, which he has been working on for 10 years. Thanks to the materials on display, we can approach the three main techniques used in the film: watercolour, which beautifully captures the journey to India, Mehndi, the temporary tattoo made with henna with which he illustrates the utopian Country of Women, and the animated cut-outs on the multi-plan used to tell the story of life in the time of Rokeya Hossain. The colour and textures of the materials used become captivating stills in the film, after having undergone a careful process of animation, digital composition, editing and sound.
Throughout the exhibition we walk through the different phases of the film. Isabel
